We are a non-profit volunteer group that promotes low-carbon heating and cooling technologies for homes and buildings in Massachusetts.
While today more than half of Americans view climate change as a major threat, and two thirds say the country should make developing renewable energy sources a top priority, many people still feel powerless, and unsure of the role they can play in bringing about a more sustainable future.
The HeatSmart Alliance shows individuals and communities that they can lead the transition to carbon neutrality by making smart choices for their homes. Specifically, the Alliance educates them about the benefits of using heat pumps to heat and cool their residences, and to generate hot water. Powered by clean electricity, modern heat pumps can reduce home greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 80% while improving home comfort and safety.
The federal government and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts recognize that large-scale conversion to heat pumps is critical to winning the struggle against climate change. They offer generous support to households that choose to install this low-carbon technology.
The Alliance presents at dozens of community events each year. It has a coaching program that provides one-on-one assistance to individuals and families that want to evaluate heat pumps for their homes, helping hundreds of people make informed decisions since 2020. It has also inspired more than a dozen communities in Massachusetts and other states to start coaching programs of their own, and provided them with educational materials and training.
The Alliance began with a handful of members in 2020, and now has more than 100 volunteers from more than 40 communities across Massachusetts.
