Coaching Resources

The HeatSmart Alliance is a pioneer in providing one-on-one heat pump coaching to homeowners, and we have developed resources to guide and support our volunteer coaches. All the resources mentioned here are available at no cost. Official HeatSmart Alliance coaches have access to additional online resources.

Coach Training

The Alliance offers a 5-session Heat Pump Coaching Basics training course for volunteer coaches a few times per year at no cost. The on-line training materials from the most recent offering are available for self study to anyone who registers, again at no cost. Learn more

Coaching Handbook

We developed our Heat Pump Coaching Handbook to guide our volunteer coaches, particularly new coaches. It follows our Coaching Model (see below) and is organized around the process we expect our coaches to follow when working with homeowners and renters. It also provides general information on heat pumps and sample emails and text that coaches can use when communicating with their clients. Access the Coaching Handbook

Coaching Model

Our comprehensive, yet flexible, Coaching Model that guides the conduct, engagement, training, and self-improvement of our volunteer coaches. We developed this model in 2021 and a some aspects are in need of an update. Our Coaching Handbook above is an up-to-date practical embodiment of the Coaching Model. Learn more

Homeowner Questionnaire and Liability Waiver

Our volunteer coaches ask every client to complete a homeowner questionnaire and liability waiver, and share their customized version of the coach and client roles template.

Most Alliance coaches gate further engagement with a client on return of these forms, but some local coaches prefer to have conversations with clients before, or without, requesting completion of these forms.

Heat Load Analysis Tool

A Microsoft Excel workbook template that can be used to estimate a home’s heat loss rate and heat load based on fuel usage history. This tool provides a precursor or supplement to standard Manual J analysis. Learn more
