About Our Volunteer Coaches

The HeatSmart Alliance has volunteer coaches who can guide a homeowner through the process of converting to heat pumps. They help a client become better informed so they can confidently make their own decisions. Our volunteers typically serve homeowners in the communities where they reside and occasionally in nearby communities, and strive to follow our well defined coaching principles

A volunteer coach typically…

  • Collects information about the existing conditions and heating system, and asks a client about their needs and priorities
  • Helps a client understand how heat pumps compare with conventional systems, and suggests questions to ask HVAC installers when they visit the home
  • Suggests which type(s) of heating/cooling and/or water-heating equipment configurations might be best suited to their needs
  • Suggests getting a no-cost Mass Save(TM) energy audit (if eligible)
  • Informs a client about available state and federal financial incentives that may apply to their home
  • May assist a client with understanding and comparing heating system quotes, and suggests follow-up questions to installers
  • May analyze a home’s heating requirements based on past fuel usage.

Our coaches try to make the process of switching  to heat pumps easier while respecting each client’s unique needs and priorities.  Our volunteer coaches are not HVAC professionals, but most have a good understanding of home heating and cooling systems, and heat pump water heaters, and should be able to answer your specific questions or refer you to trusted resources.

Please note

  • Coaching services may be offered via video-conference, telephone, or in-person (if both homeowner and coach choose to do so).
  • Access to coaching services depends on the community of residence and the availability of a trained, volunteer coach who serves that community.
  • While our coaches do not accept payment or gifts for their services, the Alliance welcomes tax-deductible donations to acknowledge the benefits they provide (see Support Us).
The coach who walked us through the whole process of replacing our aging heating systems was incredibly helpful.

We reviewed all options with our coach. He was fabulous at explaining the different options, comparing the proposal costs, and suggesting questions to ask the installers. He is the wonder energy coach.
